Ivan Basso & Alberto Contador Duo?

Italian cyclist Ivan Basso has described Spaniard Alberto Contador as a “phenom” who will end up as one of “the greats” in cycling history, he told sports daily La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Basso, who did not ride the Tour this year, stated during the race that he could see “two young guys, Contador and Andy Schleck, who hold the present and the future in their hands. It will be difficult to fight them. They were already top-quality riders years ago, now they’re a couple of phenoms.”

About the possibility that he could join the roster in Contador’s team, the Italian commented, “I know that Alberto is striving to make a team. I know that he holds me in high regard and that he would want me with him, but I’ve got a contract with Liquigas in 2010. Anyway, it’s still too soon to think about that.”

Asked about what he might say to the American Lance Armstrong, his friend for years, about the possibility of sharing a team with Contador, Basso only responded, “Mamma mia. It’s best not to think about it. Have you seen what the Tour made of Armstrong? Lance is a war machine.”
